| Information Single Day First Occurrence 2008-11-04 Tuesday November 4, 2008Jesus for President: Faith, Politics, and Why Americans Can't Keep Them ApartTime : 7:00 pm - 9:00 pmDescription : During the 2008 presidential race, Americans have cared as much about where candidates worship and whether they end their stump speeches with a heartfelt "God bless America!" as about their plans for the economy or the war in Iraq. How did American politics become so unabashedly religious? A survey of the history of religion's place in the American public square illuminates how conservative evangelicals have transformed politics over the past thirty years--and the important transformations afoot in the wake of a Bush presidency that angered many religious conservatives nearly as much as it did secular liberals.Molly Worthen is a writer who has covered American religion for the New York Times Magazine, the New Republic, and Christianity Today, as well as the author of The Man On Whom Nothing Was Lost Houghton Mifflin, 2006, a biography of an American foreign service officer in the thick of 20th-century international politics. During her last visit to Alberta, she lived with Russian Orthodox Old Believers near Lac La Biche, where she learned to butcher chickens and endure 5-hour church services in a stifling headscarf. She is currently a PhD candidate in religious history at Yale University. | Information Single Day First Occurrence 2008-11-04 Tuesday November 4, 2008Faith & Politics: Crossing the Undefended BorderRegistration Deadline : Thursday, October 30 2008Time : 11:00 am - 4:30 pm Description : Fascinating to some, troubling to others, the intimate relationship between faith and politics in the United States is well known. What is the nature of this relationship and what benefits or dangers does it provide for our Canadian context? Should the border between faith and politics be crossed? On November 4, well-known writer and authority on Evangelicalism and U.S. politics Molly Worthen will address these issues in a public forum where she will be joined by a panel of experts from a variety of faith traditions. While America elects its new president, we shall peer over the border and discuss what everyone, and no one, is talking about. A registration form is required by October 30, found at http://www.augustana.ca/centres/ronningcentre/work/forum/ Contact Info : Debbie at 780-679-1500 debbie.smeaton@ualberta.ca OR David at 780-504-5942.Organization : University of Alberta Interfaith Chaplains' Association Website : http://www.uofaweb.ualberta.ca Admission Fee : $50 / $25 for students with ID Card |
